Recording session in the House of Archaeology at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum

Adriana Günzel

In July we had the chance to extend our digital sculpture collection through further 3D recordings at the Institute for Archaeological Studies at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. The plaster cast collection of the University of Bochum is situated in the House of Archaeology in the city center and contains mainly greek sculpture. Even though the collection is comparably small, it offers some rare objects which are scarcely found in other collections, like sculpture from Cyrene in Libya. Below you can see a female head that can be dated to archaic times.

Besides that the collection contains a series of reliefs, some of which served as funerary reliefs, like the stele with a running hoplite dating to the late archaic period. This example as well as the Dexileos relief, the Aristion stele and more will be included in a learning scenario on Attic funerary districts which is currently being developed at the University of Bonn.

Due to the close connection between the institute and the Miletus excavation the collection also contains casts of votive reliefs and sculptures from Miletus. Furthermore we had the chance to record the relief from a roman sarcophagus showing the cycle of Jonah; in general, sarcophagi are rarely casted. As examples for huge monuments the relief with the apotheosis of Antoninus Pius and Faustina as well as the Base dei Vicomagistri have to be mentioned.

In two days of work we recorded almost the whole collection. Most of the models are still in postprocessing and will be published subsequently on SketchFab and, of course, included in the learning scenarios. We want to thank Soi Agelidis, custodian of the collection, for the possibility to work here!
