During EDMEDIA 2025 ‘Virtual Worlds in Learning and Teaching Archeology’ project members Ellen Rusman (Open University of the Netherlands, OUNL), Francis Brouns (OUNL), Olga Firssova (OUNL), Jitte Waagen (University of Amsterdam, UvA) and Stefan Feuser (University of Bonn) presented their paper “Students' design of Seamless learning scenarios using Virtual worlds and 3D-models in archaeology”. EDMEDIA is an international conference spanning disciplines and levels of education and attracting researchers, practitioners and innovators from 70+ countries. The conference is organized by the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education (AACE) and covers various topics on technology-enhanced learning and innovative learning design, such as e. g. AI in education, advanced technologies for teaching and learning, virtual and distance education and innovative approaches to learning and learning environments. This year’s conference was hosted by the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya in Barcelona.

The paper reported the set-up of the participatory design activity with students during the Amsterdam Spring School, a practice-oriented and theory grounded introduction on the potential of using virtual worlds as immersive environments and 3D-models for educational purposes, especially within the Archeological domain, and contained an analysis of the learning scenario’s students designed. These learning scenario designs were assessed on the various seamless learning ‘dimensions’ of Wong & Looi (2011) and evaluated students’ interpretation and understanding of the seamless learning concept through their designs. More information on the presentation and paper can be found here: EdMedia - Students’ design of Seamless learning scenarios using Virtual worlds and 3D-models in archaeology and here. The presentation was part of a session containing educational VR applications in various domains and was well-received by the audience.
